Checklist of Mozambiquean Ficus (Moraceae)

(Life; Embryophyta (plants); Angiospermae (flowering plants); Eudicotyledons; Order: Rosales; Family: Moraceae; Genus: Ficus)

Checklists

Mozambique has a fig richness of 35 species. Da Silva et al. (2004) in their preliminary checklist of the vascular plants of Mozambique record 29 species of Ficus. However, three of these are considered to be invalid records: Ficus congensis Engl. is a synonym of F. trichopoda Bak. (Berg & Wiebes, 1992; Burrows & Burrows, 2003); F. platyphylla Delile is a north-east African species allied to F. bussei Mildbr. Burret; and F. thonningii Bl. sensu stricto is a West African taxon (see discussion in Burrows & Burrows 2003). The checklist also leaves out seven additional species known to occur in Mozambique: F. salicifolia Vahl, F. nigropunctata Warb., F. tettensis Hutch., F. muelleriana C.C. Berg, F. fischeri Warb., F. chirindensis C.C. Berg, and F. ovata Vahl (Burrows & Burrows, 2003), elevating the total to 33 species. Subsequently van Noort et al (2007) recorded an additional two species, F. cyathistipula and F. modesta from inselbergs in northern Mozambique.

Genus: FICUS
