Distribution

Distribution_of_Ficus_cysthistipula_cyathistipula

Ivory Coast east to Kenya, Tanzania and south to Angola and northern Zambia, with outlying population in Mozambique.

Biology

Pollinator: Agaon fasciatum Waterston.

Habitat

Forests, usually next to streams or rivers, sometimes in rocky places, up to an altitude of 1800m.

Description

tree up to 8 m tall, terrestrial or hemi-epiphytic

Leaves

shape & colour

oblanceolate to obovate, coriaceous, apex acuminate, base acute, both surface glabrous, sometimes sparsely puberulous on the midrib beneath

 

size

6-20 x 3-7 cm

 

lateral veins

5-7 pairs

 

petiole

1.5-4 cm long, glabrous or sparsely brownish puberulous

Stipules

1.5-2.5 cm long, glabrous or minutely white puberulous, persistent

solitary or up to 3 together in the leaf axils

globose, smooth or with up to 3 mm long protuberances, Æ 3-5 cm (fresh), scabrous, wall thick and spongy, apex protruding
