Checklist of Tanzanian Ficus (Moraceae)

(Life; Embryophyta (plants); Angiospermae (flowering plants); Eudicotyledons; Order: Rosales; Family: Moraceae; Genus: Ficus)

Checklists

Thirty-nine Ficus species have been recorded from Tanzania (Berg & Hijman, 1989). Four additional species have been added with the resurrection of species formerly synonymised under F. thonningii (Burrows & Burrows 2003). Ten species are Distributionally restricted (endemic) to east Africa. Tanzania has a higher fig tree species richness than Kenya (36 species), but a lower richness than Uganda (46 species). The higher Ugandan species richness is attributable to the presence of ten species that are typical elements of the Guinea-Congolian forest region and whose Distribution does not reach as far east as Kenya or Tanzania. Thirty fig species occur in all three countries, six are shared between Tanzania and Kenya, six between Tanzania and Uganda and one between Uganda and Kenya (Berg & Hijman, 1989; van Noort & Compton 1999 and updated with change in status of F. thonningii complex of species).

Genus: FICUS
